First off, new words of the day:
Peckerish. Squidgy.
(The first person to guess the meaning of these words wins a prize!)
Ok, so down to business. Here's what I did today:
Woke up to glorious sunshine! Seriously surprising. Walked toward campus to meet up with friends for breakfast at Eat around 10:45. After breakfast, walked to the O2 store on Oxford Street (home of Topshop) to set up my new cell phone plan! I now have a U.S. number that you can call and it gets forwarded to me in the UK so it's free for both of us! I also receive free text messages internationally so let me know if you want my cell number!
After that, headed back and got lunch at Cilantro. I've noticed that all of the food here is pretty similar, except put together in extremely weird and unappetizing combinations. Except something called rocket. I see this on all kinds of menus but still don't know exactly what it is.
After lunch, walked over to the Camden Market on High Street! Was hoping that this would be the market from "What a Girl Wants" but I don't think it was. It was a really cool market though! There was a lot of punk culture going on, and also found a great vintage store. Almost bought a really awesome turban. Also considered buying a beautiful leather briefcase from a leather goods store where they make their own bags in-store, and may come back to buy it! Also saw lots of Justin Bieber memorabilia. Who knew bieber was so big over here?
Took the tube back from the market and hung out in the dorms for a bit. Met some UCL freshers (1st years/freshman). Ramsay House, where some of my friends are living, is absolutely nuts. The residents just got back today, and there was all kinds of crazy shenanigans going on, from a huge bouncy ball being thrown up and down the center of the staircase to a blow-up doll in the elevator with a mustache pasted on. Discussed Jersey Shore (Jordan's from New Jersey, and she was quick to point out that it's nothing like Jersey Shore), and learned that Essex is the British equivalent, and that there's even a TV show about it! Also, the Fresher's first year marks don't actually count toward their GPA (they just have to pass), so that's partially the reason they're so crazy apparently. Kind of nice that they can just focus on getting oriented and making friends without having to worry about grades.
Grabbed a snack at Pret-- they have the best little bottled smoothie drinks everywhere here! The only ingredients are either "crushed" or "smooshed" various types of fruits. Also sampled some of Hillary's chocolate drizzle popcorn: less fat than that squidgy chocolate bar!
Bought some school supplies at a store called Rayman Stationary-- all prepared for first day of classes tomorrow!! Then headed over to Boots for some water bottles, nail polish remover, and enamel-strengthening mouthwash! No cavities. Woohoo!
Dinner at Prezzo-- pasta, salad, and split a bottle of rose wine. I LOVE being able to order drinks whenever I want.
Walked with Jordan to the train station at King's Cross and explored my neighborhood a bit-- three pubs and two book stores within a two minute walk from me! Then called it a night. No clubbing tonight, classes begin tomorrow!
